The HistoryThe area of modern day Dryanovo was founded during the XV Century over a more ancient settlement from the XI Century. The area has a long and storied history and many reminders of this can be found strewn across the beautiful countryside. There are countless ruins from ancient villages, fortresses, columns with inscriptions, etc. which date from the time of the Thracian and Roman Empires. The remains of the Roman fortress ‘Diskoduratera’ are one of the most notable finds in the area, as it was an important marketplace and main border crossing between the Roman countries of Thracia and Mizia. The ruins of the ancient fortresses of ‘Gradyt’ and ‘Strinava’ from the Second Bulgarian Kingdom can be found dating from the XII and the XIV Centuries. The most ancient remains of life in the Balkan Peninsula can be found in the Dryanovo Municipality. The scientific expeditions and archeological excavations in “Bacho Kiro Cave”, above Dryanovo Monastery (only 4 km from Dryanovo town) prove the existence of life over 50,000 years ago – during the Paleolithic Era. Of all the history surrounding this place, the people of Dryanovo today seem to be most proud of their rebellion against the Turkish domination. One of the greatest pages from the April Uprising of 1876 was the epical defense of Dryanovo Monastery. Here, 200 Bulgarian patriots battled over 12,000 Turkish soldiers for 11 days and gave their lives for the cause and their country. This was one of the most memorable battles of the uprising in Northern Bulgaria against the Turkish rule.
